A recent Afrobarometer report has revealed that a significant majority of Ghanaians, approximately six out of ten, are considering leaving the country in search of better opportunities abroad. The primary motivation behind this desire to emigrate is the pursuit of improved economic circumstances.

According to the 2024 report, the proportion of citizens who have seriously contemplated emigration has more than doubled since 2017, with 61% of respondents admitting to having considered leaving Ghana. The main drivers of this trend are the quest for employment opportunities (55%) and the desire to escape economic hardship (33%).

The report also highlights that the most likely groups to consider emigration are the highly educated, young people, and the unemployed. North America and Europe have emerged as the top destinations of choice, with 55% and 24% of potential emigrants expressing a preference for these regions, respectively.

Furthermore, the Afrobarometer survey found that emigration is most commonly considered by:

– The most educated citizens (78% of those with post-secondary education)

– The youth (72% of 18- to 35-year-olds)

– The unemployed (68%)

– Part-time workers (65%)

– Full-time workers (63%)

These findings underscore the urgent need for policymakers to address the economic challenges facing Ghana and provide opportunities for its citizens to thrive within the country.
