Professor Godfred Bokpin, a finance and economics expert at the University of Ghana, has expressed skepticism about the sincerity of Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam’s apology for the economic hardships caused by the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
Bokpin believes that the apology, while a step in the right direction, is insufficient to address the country’s economic woes, which he argues could have been mitigated with more proactive measures.
He also questioned the motivations behind the apology, suggesting that it may not be a genuine acknowledgment of the government’s mistakes.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Bokpin emphasized that the apology should be accompanied by concrete actions to address the economic challenges facing the country.
He noted that Ghana’s high fiscal deficit in 2020, exacerbated by the misuse of COVID-19 funds, has contributed significantly to the current economic difficulties.
Bokpin argued that the government’s failure to take responsibility for its actions and provide practical solutions undermines the apology’s credibility.
